Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Triticum aestivum; from the U.S.A.; by McKinney (1937).
Natural host range and symptoms
- Echinochloa,
Panicum, Setaria spp. - usually severe mosaic.
- Triticum
aestivum - severe leaf mosaic, necrosis of tillers, stunting and crop
loss.
- Zea mays - mild mosaic (some cultivars only).
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; a mite; Aceria
tulipae; Eriophyidae. Virus not transmitted congenitally to the progeny of
the vector; transmitted by mechanical inoculation; not transmitted by contact
between plants; transmitted by seed (very low levels).
Ecology and
control
Studies reported by Slykhuis (1955); Ashworth and Futrell
(1961); Orlob (1966); Nault and Styer (1969).
Geographical
distribution
Spreads in Canada, Jordan, Romania, and the USA.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Avena sativa, Hordeum vulgare, Poa compressa, Secale cereale,
Triticum aestivum, Zea mays (some cultivars) - systemic mosaic.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Elytrigia
repens, Bromus inermis, Hordeum jubatum, Saccharum officinarum, Sorghum
bicolor.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Triticum
aestivum (especially cvs Michigan, Amber and Kent).
Assay hosts
(Local lesions or Whole plants)
