Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Vanilla tahitensis; from Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Tahiti, French
Polynesia; by Wisler et al. (1986).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Vanilla tahitensis, Vanilla pompona - leaf mosaic and
malformation.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Myzus
persicae; Aphididae. Transmitted in a non-persistent manner.
Geographical distribution
Found, but with no evidence of
spread, in French Polynesia on the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and
Tahiti.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Vanilla pompona - no symptoms in leaves inoculated by
aphids but then systemic terminal necrosis and mosaic and malformation.
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and biochemical properties
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 767 nm. Axial canal obscure.
Basic helix obscure.
Cytopathology
Virions found in mesophyll; in cytoplasm.
Inclusions present in infected cells; are pinwheels and unusual in shape;
scrolls and laminated aggregates.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically related virions
Bidens mottle and tobacco etch viruses are serologically related to,
but distinct from, vanilla mosaic potyvirus in SDS immunodiffusion tests. In
tests with dasheen mosaic virus, and its homologous antiserum, bands of
precipitate formed that were fully confluent with those of the vanilla
potyvirus.
