Tobacco yellow
vein assistor (?) luteovirus
Index
Data collated by A.N. Adams, 1987.
Nomenclature
Acronym
Strains
virulent and mild
(Adams and Hull, 1972).
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Nicotiana rustica; from Malawi; by Adams and Hull (1972).
Natural host range and symptoms
- Nicotiana
rustica - only found in natural infections with tobacco yellow vein
virus; which together cause tobacco yellow vein disease.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Myzus
persicae; Aphididae. Transmitted in a persistent manner. Virus retained when
the vector moults; can help the vector transmission of another virus (tobacco
yellow vein umbravirus); not transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by Adams and Hull
(1972).
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Nicotiana tabacum, N. clevelandii, N. glutinosa, N.
rustica - systemic veinal chlorosis and mottling.
- Lycopersicon
esculentum - mottling and rugosity (virulent strain only).
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Chenopodium
amaranticolor, C. quinoa, Cucumis sativus, Datura stramonium, Phaseolus
vulgaris, Vicia faba.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Nicotiana clevelandii (W), N. tabacum (W).

Taxonomy and
relationships
Additional comments on relationships
Few of the properties of this virus are known; it is probably a
luteovirus (Waterhouse et al., 1988).
