Tobacco
vein-distorting (?) luteovirus
Index
Data collated by A.A. Brunt, 1987.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Nicotiana tabacum; from Zimbabwe; by Smith (1946a).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Nicotiana tabacum - malformation of leaf veins. Tobacco
vein-distorting and tobacco mottle viruses together causes tobacco rosette
disease.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Myzus
persicae, Acyrthosiphon (Aulacorthum) solani; Aphididae. Transmitted in a
persistent manner. Virus can help the vector transmission of another virus
(tobacco mottle (?) umbravirus); not transmitted by mechanical inoculation;
transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact between plants.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by Smith
(1946a,b).
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Nicotiana tabacum, N. glutinosa, N. sylvestris, Lycopersicon
esculentum, Datura stramonium - leaf vein malformation.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Nicotiana tabacum, N.
glutinosa, N. sylvestris.
Assay hosts (Local
lesions or Whole plants)
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Sources of host-range data
Physical and biochemical properties
No data available.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Additional comments on relationships
Few of the properties of this virus are known, but some indicate that
it is probably a luteovirus (Waterhouse et al., 1988).
Comments and
References
General comments
This virus was
probably the first to be shown to assist the aphid transmission of another
virus, tobacco mottle umbravirus (Smith, 1946 a and b).
