Index
Data collated by A.A Brunt, 1986; F. Nienhaus, 1987.
Nomenclature
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Ipomoea batatas; from the U.K., in plants imported from Puerto Rico;
by Atkey and Brunt (1987).
Natural host range and symptoms
- Ipomoea
batatas - no conspicuous symptoms.
Transmission
Virus not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact between plants;
not transmitted by seed.
Geographical distribution
Found, but
with no evidence of spread, in the U.S.A., Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Kenya,
Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Australia, Tonga and Madeira.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Ipomoea setosa - chlorotic veinal flecks and/or
circular interveinal chlorotic spots.
Diagnostically insusceptible
host species
Nicotiana clevelandii, N. benthamiana, Chenopodium
quinoa, Gomphrena globosa, Phaseolus vulgaris.

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; 50 nm in diameter;
rounded in profile; without a conspicuous capsomere arrangement.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of DNA;
double-stranded.
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one (major);
Mr 42000-44000.
Cytopathology
Virions found in vascular parenchyma; in
cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; are unusual in shape; ovoid and
up to 4 mm in diameter with a large central lacuna and usually several
smaller peripheral lacunae; they do not contain virions. Other cellular changes:
vascular parenchyma cells, which protrude into and sometimes completely occlude,
adjacent xylem vessels.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Cauliflower mosaic, dahlia mosaic, carnation etched ring and soybean
chlorotic mottle viruses.
