Sorghum stunt
mosaic (?) nucleorhabdovirus
Index
Data collated by A.A. Brunt and D.E. Mayhew, 1988.
Nomenclature
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Sorghum vulgare; from California, U.S.A.; by Mayhew and Flock (1981).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Sorghum vulgare - chlorotic and necrotic mottling and
streaking, severe stunting and fewer seeds.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Graminella sonora; Delphacidae. Virus not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by there
may be different optimum temperatures for virus transmission and symptom
expression. Temperatures above 38ºC kill viruliferous leafhoppers, but
induce severe symptoms. Below 27ºC, the vector thrives, but no virus can be
detected in the hosts (Mayhew and Flock, 1981).
Geographical
distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Sorghum vulgare, Zea mays, Triticum aestivum - systemic
chlorotic and necrotic mottling and streaking, severe stunting and fewer seeds.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Hordeum
vulgare, Avena sativa.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Sorghum vulgare, Zea mays.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Sorghum vulgare (W), Zea mays (W).
Susceptible host
species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Sources of host-range data
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Virions rhabdo- or
bullet-shaped; enveloped; with a clear modal length; of 220 nm; 68 nm wide
(in sections). Basic helix obvious.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves and mesophyll; in
the perinuclear space.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Maize mosaic rhabdovirus.
