Index
Data collated by R. Koenig, 1990.
Nomenclature
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in river water; from the river Sieg, Germany; by Koenig and Lesemann (1985).
Transmission
Probably spread by water. Virus transmitted
by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show systemic mottle.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Chenopodium quinoa, C. amaranticolor, C. capitatum, C. foliosum, C.
murale, C. schraderianum - systemic mottle.
- Gomphrena globosa
- necrotic local lesions.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Nicotiana spp., Cucumis sativus, Datura stramonium, Vicia
faba, Antirrhinum majus.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Gomphrena globosa (L), Chenopodium quinoa (W).
Susceptible host species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Purification method
Koenig and
Lesemann (1983 and 1985).
Physical and biochemical properties
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 466 nm; 13 nm wide.
Physical properties
One sedimenting component in purified
preparations.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of RNA;
single-stranded; linear; unipartite.
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 22800.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, mesophyll and the
epidermis; in cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; are crystals in
the cytoplasm and unusual in shape; paracrystalline aggregates; they contain
virions.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically related virions
Plantago severe mosaic and viola mottle viruses.
Virus(es)
with serologically unrelated virions
Potato X,
cactus X, cymbidium mosaic, papaya mosaic and white clover mosaic viruses.
