Ryegrass
alphacryptovirus
Index
Data collated by P.L. Guy, 1987.
Nomenclature
Synonyms
ryegrass spherical cryptic virus.
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Lolium multiflorum, (unknown cultivar) which may have also contained
ryegrass mosaic virus; from the U.K.; by Plumb (1973).
Natural host range and symptoms
- Lolium perenne,
Lolium multiflorum, Lolium multiflorum × L. perenne - symptomless but
may enhance symptoms of ryegrass mosaic virus in some cultivars.
Transmission
Virus not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; not transmitted by contact between plants; transmitted by seed;
transmitted by pollen to the seed.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in Australia, Germany, Italy, and the UK.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions (or very few virions; more virions in plants also infected
with ryegrass mosaic virus). Electron microscopy: repeated testing with ISEM
necessary to ensure that preparation is free of other viruses.
Purification method
Extract sap in
distilled water, heat 40ºC for 10 minutes, then purify through differential
centrifugation.
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; not enveloped;
29-30 nm in diameter; rounded in profile; without a conspicuous capsomere
arrangement.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of RNA;
double-stranded.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves; in cytoplasm and
in nuclei.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Beet cryptic and carnation cryptic viruses.
