Raspberry vein
chlorosis (?) nucleorhabdovirus
Index
Data collated by R. Stace-Smith, 1987.
Nomenclature
Synonyms
raspberry chlorotic virus.
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Rubus idaeus; from Scotland, U.K.; by Cadman (1952).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms vary seasonally.
- Rubus idaeus.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Aphis
idaei; Aphididae. Transmitted in a persistent manner. Virus not transmitted
by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact
between plants; not transmitted by seed; not transmitted by pollen.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by Cadman and
Stace-Smith (1970); Jones et al. (1987).
Geographical
distribution
Probably distributed worldwide (wherever Rubus is
grown). Spreads in Canada and New Zealand. Found, but with no evidence of
spread, in Canada and New Zealand.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
Maintenance and propagation
hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Rubus idaeus (W), Fragaria vesca (W).
Susceptible host
species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Sources of host-range data
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Virions rhabdo- or
bullet-shaped; with a clear modal length; of 500 nm; 70-80 nm wide. Axial
canal obscure. Basic helix obvious; pitch of basic helix 4-5 nm.
Cytopathology
Virions found in vascular parenchyma; in
cytoplasm and in the perinuclear space. Inclusions absent from infected cells.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Best tests for diagnosis
Transmission by aphid vector to virus-free raspberry clones.
