Data collated by A.A. Brunt, 1991.
Nomenclature
Synonyms
poplar potyvirus, populus virus.

ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Populus × canadensis, P. tremuloides; from the U.S.A.; by Martin
et al. (1982).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Populus × canadensis, P. grandidenta, P. tremuloides -
chlorotic and/or necrotic leafspots in spring, bronzing and necrosis of leaves
later and, ultimately, death of branches and then trees.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Phaseolus vulgaris, P. lunatus, Vigna unguiculata -
local chlorotic or necrotic spots; systemic mottling and necrosis.
- Nicotiana clevelandii - mild systemic leaf chlorosis.
- Chenopodium quinoa - chloroitc local lesions; no systemic
infection.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Cucumis sativus, Nicotiana glutinosa, N. tabacum, Petunia × hybrida, Pisum
sativum.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Nicotiana
clevelandii, Phaseolus vulgaris, P. lunatus, Vigna unguiculata.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Chenopodium quinoa (L),
Phaseolus vulgaris (W), Vigna unguiculata (W).

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP: 60
°C. LIV: 1.2 days (at 22ºC). DEP: log10 minus 5. Leaf sap contains few
virions.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 805 nm; 12.6 nm wide. Axial
canal obscure.
Cytopathology
Inclusions present in infected cells; are
pinwheels; they do not contain virions.
