Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Phytolacca americana; from the U.S.A.; by Woods (1902).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Phytolacca americana - chlorotic leaf mottling.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Myzus
persicae; Aphididae. Transmitted in a non-persistent manner. Virus
transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted
by seed.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in the USA
(central, southern and eastern states).
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Phytolacca americana - systemic chlorotic mottling and
malformation.
- Chenopodium quinoa - chlorotic local lesions; not
systemic.
- Gomphrena globosa - chlorosis and necrotic spotting of
systemically infected leaves.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Susceptible host species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP:
70-75 °C. LIV: 10 days (at 25ºC). DEP: log10 minus 5-6.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 776 nm; 12-13 nm wide. Axial
canal obscure. Basic helix obscure.
Cytopathology
Inclusions present in infected cells; are
pinwheels; they do not contain virions.
