Petunia vein
clearing (?) caulimovirus
Index
Data collated by D.-E. Lesemann, 1991.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Petunia × hybrida hort. cv. Himmelsroeschen; from Germany; by
Lesemann and Casper (1973).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist and vary
seasonally. Symptoms chlorotic vein clearing, leaf malformation.
- Petunia × hybrida hort. cv. Himmelsroeschen - chlorotic
clearing and banding of leaf veins, leaf malformation, stunting of sprouts.
Transmission
Virus not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by grafting.
Geographical
distribution
Found, but with no evidence of spread, in Germany.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show vein clearing, leaf malformation.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Petunia spp. - vein clearing, chlorotic vein banding
and leaf distortion.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; not enveloped;
43-46 nm in diameter; rounded in profile; without a conspicuous capsomere
arrangement.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, mesophyll,
epidermis, vascular parenchyma, phloem and the companion cells; in cytoplasm and
in nuclei. Inclusions present in infected cells; are viroplasms and unusual in
shape; proliferation of endoplasmic reticulum; they do not contain virions.
Other cellular changes: proliferation of endoplasmic reticulum into multilayers,
surrounding the virion-containing regions which also contain the dark staining,
viroplasm like rounded and vacuolated inclusions.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Cauliflower mosaic and dahlia mosaic viruses.
