Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Capsicum annuum, C. frutescens, Petunia × hybrida; from Tafo,
Ghana; by Brunt and Kenten (1971).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Capsicum annuum, C. frutescens - mottle, leaf shape
malformation.
- Datura stramonium - mosaic, fruit malformation, with
spine suppression.
- Lycopersicon esculentum - mosaic and necrotic
or chlorotic spots and streaks.
- Petunia × hybrida - mottle and
mosaic.
- Datura metel, Nicotiana tabacum, Solanum integrifolium, S.
melongena, S. nigrum - mosaic.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Aphis
gossypii, A. spiraecola, Myzus persicae, Toxoptera citricidus; Aphididae.
Transmitted in a non-persistent manner. Virus transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact between plants.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana,
Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and
symptoms
- Chenopodium amaranticolor, C. foetidum - local
chlorotic or necrotic ringspots.
- Capsicum annuum, C. frutescens -
systemic mosaic, mottle and leaf shape malformation.
- Nicotiana
clevelandii, N. megalosiphon, N. occidentalis, Physalis angulata, P.
floridana - systemic mosaic. Nicotiana tabacum cv. Dutch A -
local necrotic or chlorotic ringspots.
Diagnostically insusceptible
host species
Gomphrena globosa, Beta vulgaris, Brassica
campestris ssp. pekinensis, Cucumis sativus, Nicotiana sylvestris.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Nicotiana benthamiana,
N. clevelandii, N. megalosiphon, N. occidentalis, Petunia × hybrida.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Chenopodium amaranticolor (L),
C. quinoa (L), C. foetidum (L) at 20-24ºC.

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP:
55-60 °C. LIV: 7-8 days. DEP: log10 minus 3-4. Infectivity of sap not changed
by treatment with di-ethyl ether. Leaf sap contains few virions.
Purification method
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 770 nm; 12 nm wide. Axial canal
obscure.
Physical properties
One sedimenting component in purified
preparations; sedimentation coefficient 155 S.
Biochemical properties
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 32000-33000.
Cytopathology
Virions found in all parts of the host
plant; in cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; are pinwheels; they
do not contain virions.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically related virions
Bean yellow mosaic, clover yellow vein, Colombian datura virus,
datura shoestring, potato Y, tobacco etch and watermelon mosaic viruses.
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Henbane mosaic, iris mild mosaic, hippeastrum mosaic, lettuce mosaic,
pea seed-borne mosaic and turnip mosaic viruses.
