Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Capsicum annuum; from Mexico; by Brown et al. (1989).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist and vary
seasonally.
- Capsicum annuum cvs Jalapeno and Serrano - mild yellow leaf
curling and mosaic.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Bemisia tabaci; Aleyrodidae. Transmitted in a persistent manner. Virus
not transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not
transmitted by contact between plants; not transmitted by seed.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in Mexico and the USA
(Texas).
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Capsicum annuum cvs Anahiem, Serrano and Tabasco -
systemic yellow leaf curling.
- Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Pole Boy
- systemic yellow mosaic or leaf curling.
Diagnostically
insusceptible host species
Cucumis melo cv. Topmark, C.
sativus cv. Straight eight, Gossypium hirsutum cv. DP90, Malva
parviflora, Glycine max cv. Frost beater.
Maintenance and
propagation hosts
Lycopersicon esculentum, Capsicum annuum.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Capsicum annuum (W),
Lycopersicon esculentum (W).

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions. Electron microscopy: fix with buffered (pH 7.0) 0.25%
glutaraldehyde.
Particle morphology
Virions geminate; 20 nm in diameter;
dimers 30 nm in length; without a conspicuous capsomere arrangement.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of DNA;
single-stranded.

General comments
Alone, the virus
induces mild leaf symptoms in pepper, but peppers also containing chino del
tomaté virus and another uncharacterised whitefly transmitted virus have the
tigré disease.
