Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Pelargonium peltatum; from southern Italy; by Russo et al.
(1979).
Natural host range and symptoms
- Pelargonium
peltatum, P. zonale - mild vein clearing.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Nicotiana benthamiana, N. clevelandii, N. glutinosa, N.
rustica, N. tabacum, N. debneyi, N. megalosiphon, Capsicum annuum, Petunia ×
hybrida - chlorotic or necrotic local lesions in older plants, but
systemic vein clearing, chlorotic vein banding and leaf malformation of
seedlings inoculated 4 leaf-stage.
- Gomphrena globosa - small red
local lesions; not systemic.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Chenopodium amaranticolor, C. quinoa, Cucumis sativus, Phaseolus
vulgaris, Beta vulgaris.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Nicotiana benthamiana, N. glutinosa.

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP: 60
°C. LIV: 2 days (at 22-24ºC). DEP: log10 minus 6.
Particle morphology
Virions rhabdo- or
bullet-shaped; of 250 nm (in sections), or 175 nm (purified virions); 70 nm
wide (in sections), or 90 nm wide (purified virions). Axial canal obvious; 30-35
nm in diameter. Basic helix obvious.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, mesophyll,
vascular parenchyma and the phloem; in cytoplasm and in the perinuclear space.
