potyvirus
Index
Data collated by E.W. Kitajima, 1991.
Nomenclature
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Pogostemon patchouli; from Campinas, S.P. in Brazil; by Gama (1979).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Pogostemon patchouli.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector (probably); an
insect (probably); Myzus persicae; Aphididae (probably). Transmitted in a
non-persistent manner. Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible. Experimentally infected plants mostly show local lesions, then
systemic chlorotic spots or mosaic.
Diagnostically susceptible
host species and symptoms
- Chenopodium amaranticolor -
local lesion with reddish halo.
- Zinnia elegans - mosaic.
- Nicotiana tabacum - systemic chlorotic spots.
- Bidens
pilosa, Gomphrena globosa - symptomless.
Diagnostically
insusceptible host species
Crotalaria juncea, Capsicum annuum,
Datura stramonium, Phaseolus vulgaris, Petunia × hybrida.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Chenopodium amaranticolor (L),
Zinnia elegans, Nicotiana tabacum (W).

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP:
55-60 °C. LIV: 16 days. DEP: log10 minus 3-4. Leaf sap contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 720 nm; 15 nm wide. Axial canal
obscure. Basic helix obscure.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, mesophyll and the
epidermis; in cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; are pinwheels.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Best tests for diagnosis
Chenopodium amaranticolor develop local lesions; Nicotiana tabacum
local and systemic chlorotic spots; and Zinnia elegans systemic mosaic.
