virus
Index
Data collated by P. van Dijk, 1991.
Nomenclature
Synonyms
hogweed 4 virus (Bem and Murant, 1979; Van Dijk
and Bos, 1989).
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Heracleum sphondylium; from the U.K.; by Bem and Murant (1979).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms chlorosis and
curling of older leaves.
- Pastinaca sativa - leaf chlorosis and curling.
- Heracleum sphondylium.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation;
not transmitted by seed.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in
the Netherlands. Found, but with no evidence of spread, in the U.K.
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible. Experimentally infected plants mostly show chlorotic to necrotic
local lesions.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and
symptoms
- Ammi majus - local and systemic necrosis and
chlorosis.
- Chenopodium quinoa - chlorotic local lesions; systemic
chlorotic spotting and malformation.
- Chenopodium amaranticolor, Cucumis
sativus - chlorotic local lesions; not systemic.
- Montia
perfoliata, Spinacia oleracea - latent.
Diagnostically
insusceptible host species
Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, Phaseolus
vulgaris, Nicotiana clevelandii, N. tabacum.
Maintenance and
propagation hosts
Assay hosts
(Local lesions or Whole plants)
Chenopodium quinoa (L and W).
Susceptible host

Sources of host-range data

Murant (1979); Van Dijk and Bos (1989).
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
LIV:
0.18-0.75 days (3-18 hours). Leaf sap contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Taxonomy and
relationships
Best tests for diagnosis
Chenopodium quinoa infected systemically, C. amaranticolor
chlorotic local lesions only, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba and Nicotiana
clevelandii not infected.
