Paprika mild
mottle tobamovirus
Index
Data collated by J.R. Diaz-Ruiz, I. Garcia Luque and
M.T. Serra, 1992.
Nomenclature
Synonyms
tobacco mosaic virus - P11 pepper isolate.
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Capsicum annuum; from the Netherlands; by Rast (1979).
Natural host range and symptoms
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation;
possibly transmitted by seed.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in the Eurasian region; the Netherlands.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show small chlorotic or necrotic local
lesions, mosaic and stunting.
Diagnostically susceptible host
species and symptoms
- Capsicum spp. with either L+L+
or L1L1 genotypes - mild mottle or mosaic.
- Nicotiana
benthamiana - mosaic, stunting.
- Nicotiana clevelandii -
mosaic, malformation.
- Solanum pseudocapsicastrum - mosaic.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Capsicum annuum, Nicotiana benthamiana and N. clevelandii.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Capsicum annuum (W), C.
frutescens (L), Nicotiana clevelandii (W), N. sylvestris (L),
N. tabacum cv Xanthi (L).
Susceptible host species
Insusceptible host species

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains many virions.
Particle morphology
Virions rod-shaped; not enveloped;
usually straight; with a clear modal length.
Biochemical properties
Virions contain 5 % nucleic acid;
95 % protein.
Genome consists of RNA; single-stranded; linear. Total genome size 6.5
kb. Genome unipartite; largest (or only) genome part 6.5 kb. Genomic nucleic
acid isolated by Alonso et al. (1991). Infectivity retained when
deproteinised with phenol or detergent. Additional factor not required for
infectivity.
Sequence database accession code(s)

and 3´ non-coding region. 7/9.
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 17706; coat protein.
Replication
Replication does not depend on a helper
virus.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves; in cytoplasm.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Tobacco and tomato mosaic tobamoviruses.
