in Ornithogalum thyrsoides; from Oklahoma, U.S.A.; by Smith and Brierley
(1944a).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
Symptoms mottling, mosaic and sunken areas.
- Ornithogalum spp. and hybrids - mottling of leaves and stems,
flowers deformed.
- Lachenalia spp. and hybrids - mosaic or mottling
of leaves and flower stems; flowers deformed.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Myzus
persicae; Aphididae. Transmitted in a non-persistent manner. Virus
transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical
distribution
Spreads in the Netherlands, South Africa, and the USA.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show mottling, mosaic and sunken areas in
leaves.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Chenopodium quinoa, Tetragonia tetragonioides, Nicotiana
clevelandii (Derks et al., 1983).

Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions. Electron microscopy: elimination of mucilage in plant sap
before electron microscopy.

Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 740 nm; 12 nm wide. Axial canal
obscure. Basic helix obscure.
Physical properties
One sedimenting component in purified
preparations.
Biochemical properties
Virions contain 5 % nucleic acid;
95 % protein.
Genome consists of RNA; single-stranded; linear. Total genome size »
10 kb. Genome unipartite; largest (or only) genome part » 10 kb. Genomic
nucleic acid isolated by Burger and Von Wechmar (1989). Poly A region present;
the genome has a polyadenylated 3´-terminal tail. Nucleotide sequence

Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves and probably all
parts of the host plant.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically related virions
Bean yellow mosaic, potato Y, hyacinth mosaic, zucchini yellow mosaic
and passionfruit woodiness viruses.
Additional comments on relationships
There are strong sequence homologies with most sequenced potyviruses
(Burger et al., 1990).
