bamia leaf-crinkle virus.
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Abelmoschus esculentus (syn. Hibiscus esculentus); from the
Sudan; by Kirkpatrick (1930).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
Symptoms vein thickening, leaf crinkling and curling, vein enations, plants
stunted and develop fewer and smaller pods.
- Abelmoschus esculentus - leaf crinkling, curling, plants
stunted.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Bemisia tabaci; Aleyrodidae. Transmitted in a persistent manner. Virus
not transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not
transmitted by seed.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by
Atiri and Fayoyin (1989).
Geographical distribution
Spreads
in Chad, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and Sudan.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show leaf curl.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Gossypium hirsutum, Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Congo Jute, Urena
lobata - leaf curl.
- Nicotiana tabacum cv. Havana 24 - faint
mottling.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or
Whole plants)
Abelmoschus esculentus (W).
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Sources of host-range data
Yassin
and Nour (1965); Lana (1976).
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Purification method
Grinding in
phosphate buffer 0.2M pH 7.8, butanol/chloroform clarification, differential
centrifugation, sucrose density gradient, yielding at 1-5 mg/kg.
Particle morphology
Virions geminate; 20 nm in diameter;
rounded in profile.
