Oak ringspot
virus
Index
Data collated by J.P. Fulton, K.S. Kim and O.W.
Barnett, 1987.
Nomenclature
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Quercus marilandica and Q. velutina; from Northwest Arkansas,
U.S.A.; by Barnett (1971); Kim and Fulton (1973).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Quercus marilandica, Q. velutina - chlorotic ringspots and
mosaic, vein-banding and oak leaf patterns, especially on older leaves.
Transmission
Virus not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by grafting.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by Barnett (1971); Kim and Fulton (1973).
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
Quercus marilandica, Q. velutina.
Maintenance and
propagation hosts
Quercus marilandica, Q. velutina.
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions (none found in extracts).
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with no clear modal length; 13 nm wide. Axial canal obscure.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves and mesophyll; in
cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; they contain virions. Other
cellular changes: areas of vesiculation, prominent Golgi and paramural bodies,
and cell wall protrusions.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Best tests for diagnosis
A
virus-like disorder of overcup oak is not graft transmissible (Gregory and
Seliskar, 1970), and no virions could be found (Neinhaus and Yarwood, 1972).

General comments
The relationship to
viruses of oak in Europe (Blattny and Prochazkov, 1966; Schmelzer et al.,
1966) is not known.
