Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
From water from
the River Neckar, Germany; by Koenig and Lesemann (1985).
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Found, but with no evidence of
spread, in Germany.
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and
symptoms
- Nicotiana benthamiana, N. clevelandii -
conspicuous systemic leaf chlorosis.
- Chenopodium quinoa, Datura
stramonium, Gomphrena globosa, Nicotiana tabacum, Petunia × hybrida -
local lesions; no systemic infection.
Maintenance and propagation
hosts
Nicotiana benthamiana, N. clevelandii.
Assay

Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Sources of host-range data
Koenig
and Lesemann (1985).
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains many virions.
Purification method
Gallitelli
et al. (1985).
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; not enveloped; 30
nm in diameter; rounded in profile.
Physical properties
One sedimenting component in purified
preparations; sedimentation coefficient 133 S. Density 1.357 g cm-3
in CsCl.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of RNA;
single-stranded; unipartite; largest (or only) genome part 4.7 kb.
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 45000.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves and the mesophyll;
in cytoplasm. Other cellular changes: vesicles at the periphery of microbodies.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically related virions
Eggplant mottled crinkle, pelargonium leaf curl, Moroccan pepper,
petunia asteroid mosaic, tomato bushy stunt and carnation Italian ringspot
viruses.
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Cymbidium ringspot virus.
Additional comments on relationships
The viral genome has about 15% nucleotide sequence homology with that
of tomato bushy stunt tombusvirus.
