mosaic (?) potyvirus
Index
Data collated by A.A. Brunt, 1991.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Tropaeolum majus; from the U.S.A. and the U.K.; by Jensen (1950);
Smith (1950).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Tropaeolum majus - vein clearing, mottling and slight leaf
malformation; occasionally flower breaking.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Aphis
fabae, Dysaphis apifolia, Myzus persicae, Aulocorthum circumflexum,
Rhopalosiphum padi; Aphididae. Transmitted in a non-persistent manner.
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical
distribution
Spreads in Brazil, South Africa, the UK, and the USA.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Tropaeolum majus - severe leaf mosaic.
- Zinnia
elegans - mild leaf chlorosis.
Maintenance and propagation
hosts
Tropaeolum majus, Zinnia elegans.
Assay hosts
(Local lesions or Whole plants)
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP: 60
°C. LIV: 2-4 days.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 750 nm.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Additional comments on relationships
Although there is no definite evidence, it is thought that the
viruses in Tropaeolum majus in Brazil, South Africa, the U.K. and the
U.S.A. are the same (da Graca and Martin, 1977).
