Maize line virus
Index
Data collated by A.A. Brunt and K. Bock, 1987.
Nomenclature
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Zea mays (in complex with maize stripe tenuivirus); from Tanzania; by
Storey (1936).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Zea mays - yellow striping along leaf veins but no apical
bending or stunting, like that caused by maize stripe virus.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Peregrinus maidis; Delphacidae. Transmitted in a persistent manner. Virus
not transmitted by mechanical inoculation; not transmitted by contact between
plants.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by Kulkarni
(1973); Smith (1936).
Geographical distribution
Spreads in
Kenya and Tanzania (symptoms are swamped by maize streak virus, which is
widespread, so this virus may occur more commonly (Kulkarni, 1973)).
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Zea mays (hybrid 511, hybrid 613B, Wisconsin 641AA) -
small chlorotic spots at leaf bases, followed by vein chlorosis and mottling.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Chenopodium
amaranticolor, Chenopodium quinoa, Glycine max, Petunia × hybrida, Phaseolus
vulgaris.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Susceptible host species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Sources of host-range data
Kulkarni
(1973); Storey (1936).
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Purification method
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; not enveloped; 34
nm in diameter; rounded in profile; without a conspicuous capsomere arrangement.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Cucumber mosaic, maize mottle chlorotic stunt and maize streak
viruses.
Best tests for diagnosis
Maize line
virus sometimes occurs together with maize streak and/or sugarcane mosaic
viruses.
