hordeivirus
Index
Data collated by A.O. Jackson, 1991.
Nomenclature
Acronym
Strains
Salinas isolate,
European isolate (Hungary), Mentha.
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Lychnis divaricata; from Salinas, California, U.S.A. in seed imported
from Europe.
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
Symptoms mosaic, ringspot, necrosis.
- Lychnis divaricata, L. chalcedonica, L. coronaria, L. haageana
- systemic ringspots, mosaic and necrosis.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation;
probably transmitted by grafting; transmitted by seed.
Geographical
distribution
Experimental host range
Many (>9) families
susceptible. Experimentally infected plants mostly show ringspots and mosaic.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Capsicum frutescens, Chenopodium album, C. amaranticolor,
Nicotiana tabacum - chlorotic or necrotic local lesions.
- Callistephus chinensis, Nicotiana clevelandii, N. glutinosa, Petunia ×
hybrida, Tetragonia tetragonioides - systemic.
Diagnostically
insusceptible host species
Centaurea cyanus, Lactuca sativa,
Phaseolus vulgaris, Vigna unguiculata ssp. unguiculata, Lycopersicon
esculentum.
Maintenance and propagation hosts

Physical and biochemical properties
Particle morphology
Virions rod-shaped; not enveloped;
usually straight; with no clear modal length; of 100-175 nm; 25 nm wide. Basic
helix obvious.
Biochemical properties
Virions contain 5 % nucleic acid;
95 % protein; 0 % lipid.
Genome consists of RNA; single-stranded; linear. Total genome size 9 kb.
Genome of three parts; largest (or only) genome part the largest 3.8 kb; the 2nd
largest 3.3 kb; the 3rd largest 3 kb. Genomic nucleic acid isolated by Hunter
et al. (1989).
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 23000. Method of preparation: SDS gel electrophoresis.
Replication
Replication does not depend on a helper
virus.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Barley stripe mosaic and poa semilatent viruses.
Additional comments on relationships
No detectable cross-hybridization between lychnis ringspot virus,
barley stripe mosaic virus and poa semilatent virus genomes and cDNAs
transcribed from them.
