top-spotting badnavirus
Index
Data collated by A.A. Brunt, 1992.
Nomenclature
Synonyms
kalanchoe `commelina yellow mottle badnavirus'.
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Kalanchoe blossfeldiana; from the U.S.A.; by Hearon and Locke (1984).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Kalanchoe blossfeldiana - sunken circular yellow spots and
occasional leaf deformation in intolerant cultivars.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Planococcus citri; Pseudococcidae. Virus transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by seed; transmitted by pollen to the seed.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in the UK and the USA.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Kalanchoe blossfeldiana - circular yellow spots in
systemically infected leaves.
Diagnostically insusceptible host
species
Chenopodium quinoa, Cucumis sativus, Nicotiana
benthamiana, N. glutinosa, Phaseolus vulgaris.
Maintenance and
propagation hosts
Assay
hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana (W).
Susceptible host
species
Insusceptible host
species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Purification method
Lockhart and
Ferji (1988).
Physical and biochemical properties
Particle morphology
Virions bacilliform; not enveloped;
130 nm in length; 30 nm wide.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of DNA;
double-stranded; circular. Total genome size 7.35 kb. Genome unipartite;
largest (or only) genome part 7.35 kb.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves and mesophyll; in
cytoplasm.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Banana streak, cacao swollen shoot, commelina yellow mottle,
dioscorea bacilliform, rice tungro bacilliform and sugarcane viruses.
Additional comments on relationships
The viral genome shows weak homology with those of banana streak and
badnaviruses.
