Jatropha mosaic
bigeminivirus
Index
Data collated by K.S. Kim, 1986.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Jatropha gossypiifolia; from Puerto Rico; by Bird (1957).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Jatropha gossypiifolia, J. podagrica, J. multifida, Croton lobatus,
Jacquemontia tamnifolia, Phaseolus vulgaris - yellow mosaics.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Bemisia tabaci; Aleyrodidae. Transmitted in a semi-persistent manner.
Virus lost by the vector when it moults; not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by seed.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in Kenya and Puerto Rico.
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and biochemical properties
Particle morphology
Virions geminate; not enveloped;
15-18 nm in diameter; 15 and 30 nm in length; rounded in profile; without a
conspicuous capsomere arrangement.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of DNA;
single-stranded.
Replication
Genome replicates in nuclei.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, phloem and
companion cells; in nuclei; in sieve tubes. Inclusions present in infected
cells; are crystals in the nucleus, or amorphous X-bodies (in cytoplasm), or
unusual in shape; fibrillar bodies; they contain virions (in the nuclear
inclusions), or they do not contain virions (in the cytoplasmic inclusions).
Other cellular changes: the nucleolar segregation of granular and fibrillar
components (Kim et al., 1986).
