Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Hedera helix; from southern Italy; by Russo et al. (1979).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms vary seasonally.
- Hedera helix - transitory chlorosis of leaf veins, some
chlorotic blotching in spring.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and
symptoms
- Gomphrena globosa, Nicotiana benthamiana -
chlorotic or necrotic local lesions; transitory systemic vein clearing.
- Nicotiana clevelandii, N. tabacum cv. Xanthi - systemic ringspots.
- Nicotiana glutinosa, N. megalosiphon - systemic vein clearing.
- Datura stramonium - ring-like local lesions; not systemic.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Chenopodium
quinoa, Cucumis sativus, Nicotiana rustica, N. tabacum, Solanum melongena.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Nicotiana benthamiana,
N. clevelandii.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or
Whole plants)
Gomphrena globosa (L/W),
Nicotiana benthamiana (W), N. clevelandii (W).

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP: 50
°C. LIV: 0.25 days (6-9 hours). DEP: log10 minus 5. Leaf sap contains few
virions.
Particle morphology
Virions rhabdo- or
bullet-shaped; usually straight; of 100-200 nm (in sap), or 180-320 nm (in
vivo); 60-70 nm wide (in sap), or 45-50 nm wide (in vivo).
Cytopathology
Virions found in mesophyll, vascular
parenchyma and the phloem; in cytoplasm.
