Host range and symptoms

Natural host range and symptoms

• Vitis vinifera - symptomless infection in most European cultivars and American Vitis species and their hybrids.

Transmission

Virus not transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting.

Geographical distribution

Spreads in South Africa. Found, but with no evidence of spread, in European countries and the U.S.A.

Experimental host range

Few (<3) families susceptible.

Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms

• Vitis rupestris - scattered clearing of veinlets and leaf deformation with severe strains.

Maintenance and propagation hosts

Vitis rupestris.

Physical and biochemical properties

Particle morphology

Virions isometric; not enveloped; 30 nm in diameter.

Biochemical properties

Genome consists of RNA; single-stranded.

By grafting to Vitis vinifera and serological methods (ELISA and ISEM).
