Grapevine
ajinashika disease (?) luteovirus
Index
Data collated by S. Holland, 1986. Revised by A.A.
Brunt, 1991.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Vitis vinifera; from Japan; by Namba et al. (1979).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
Vitis vinifera - no leaf symptoms, fruit are unpalatable because
of small sugar content.
Transmission
Transmitted by means not involving a vector.
Virus not transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not
transmitted by contact between plants.
Geographical
distribution
Found, but with no evidence of spread, in Japan.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Vitis vinifera - no leaf symptoms, fruit unpalatable.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Susceptible host species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Purification method
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; not enveloped; 28
nm in diameter; angular in profile; without a conspicuous capsomere arrangement.
Physical properties
One sedimenting component in purified
preparations; sedimentation coefficient 110 S. Density 1.38 g cm-3
in CsCl.
Biochemical properties
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 23000; coat protein.
Cytopathology
Virions found in phloem and companion cells
in sieve tubes; in cytoplasm, in nuclei, and in cell vacuoles. Inclusions
present in infected cells; are crystals in the cytoplasm; they contain virions.
Other cellular changes: necrosis of phloem cells.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Barley yellow dwarf and potato leafroll viruses.
