Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Freesia refracta; from Lisse, The Netherlands; by Van Koot et
al. (1954).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Freesia refracta - mild chlorosis symptomless.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Macrosiphum euphorbiae, Myzus persicae; Aphididae. Transmitted in a
non-persistent manner. Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation; not
transmitted by contact between plants; not transmitted by seed; not transmitted
by pollen.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in Australia,
Ireland, the Netherlands, and the UK. Found, but with no evidence of spread, in
New Zealand.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Phaseolus vulgaris, Chenopodium quinoa, Trifolium incarnatum,
Vicia faba.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local
lesions or Whole plants)
Susceptible host species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains many virions.
Purification method
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 825 nm; 12 nm wide. Axial canal
obscure.
Replication
Replication does not depend on a helper
virus.
Cytopathology
Virions found in all parts of the host
plant; in cytoplasm. Inclusions absent from infected cells.

General comments
This virus, together
with freesia leaf necrosis virus is the cause of a disease originally named
freesia streak (Brunt, 1974; van Dorsk, 1973).
