Eggplant mottled
crinkle tombusvirus
Index
Data collated by K.M. Makkouk, 1987.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Solanum melongena; from Jieh, south of Beirut, Lebanon; by Makkouk
et al. (1981).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Solanum melongena - mottling and crinkling of leaves.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation;
transmitted by grafting.
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and
symptoms
- Chenopodium quinoa, C. amaranticolor, Datura
stramonium, Gomphrena globosa, Nicotiana glutinosa, Phaseolus vulgaris cv.
Bountiful - local lesions.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Chenopodium amaranticolor (L), C. quinoa (L), Datura
stramonium (L), Gomphrena globosa (L), Nicotiana glutinosa
(L), Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Bountiful (L).
Susceptible host
species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Purification method
Physical and biochemical properties
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; not enveloped;
28-30 nm in diameter; without a conspicuous capsomere arrangement.
Physical properties
One sedimenting component in purified
preparations; sedimentation coefficient 132 S.
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 41000.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves; in cytoplasm and
in chloroplasts (but possibly after chloroplast membranes disintegrate).
Inclusions present in infected cells; are unusual in shape; multivesicular
cytoplasmic inclusions. Other cellular changes: an increase in the volume of
cytoplasm.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically related virions
Pelargonium leaf curl, tomato bushy stunt (strain BS-3) and petunia
asteroid mosaic viruses.
Best tests for diagnosis
Host
range, as a large number of indicator plants produce local lesions, and
serology.
