Data collated by D.E. Lesemann, 1989.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Dendrobium phalaenopsis; from Germany; by Lesemann (1977).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Dendrobium phalaenopsis - vein necrosis in leaves, petals and
sepals.
Geographical distribution
Found, but with no evidence of
spread, in Germany, but only in two glasshouses.
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions. Electron microscopy: mount sap in 2% PTA, pH 7.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; very with a clear modal length; of 1865 nm; 10-12 nm wide.
Axial canal obvious (but indistinct). Basic helix obvious.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, mesophyll,
epidermis and parenchyma surrounding the vascular bundle and in the petals and
sepals of the flowers; in cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; are
unusual in shape; are bundles of virions; they contain virions. Other cellular
changes: peripheral vesiculation of mitochondria.
