Host range and symptoms

Natural host range and symptoms

Symptoms disappear soon after infection.
• Colocasia esculenta - vein clearing and slight leaf malformation.

Transmission

Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Planococcus citri; Pseudococcidae. Virus not transmitted by mechanical inoculation; not transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact between plants.

Geographical distribution

Spreads in the Cook Islands, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Western Samoa.

Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms

• Colocasia esculenta, Alocasia macrorrhizos, Xanthosoma sp. - transient vein-clearing and slight leaf malformation.

Physical and biochemical properties

Properties of particles in sap

Leaf sap contains few virions.

Purification method

James et al. (1973).

Particle morphology

Virions bacilliform; not enveloped; 125 nm in length; 28 nm wide.

Physical properties

One sedimenting component in purified preparations; sedimentation coefficient 285 S.

Cytopathology

Virions found in all parts of the host plant and often in phloem sieve tubes; in cytoplasm and in cell vacuoles.

Possible Badnavirus

Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions

Cacao swollen shoot badnavirus.

Best tests for diagnosis

"Male" taro plants in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands also containing taro bobone rhabdovirus develop very severe "alomae" symptoms.
