Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Gossypium barbadense; from Nigeria; by Farquharson (1912).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Gossypium barbadense, Abelmoschus esculentus, Corchorus
fasicularis - chlorosis, thickened and malformed veins, petioles and
leaves.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Bemisia tabaci; Aleyrodidae. Transmitted in a persistent manner. Virus
not transmitted congenitally to the progeny of the vector; not transmitted by
mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact
between plants; not transmitted by seed.
Ecology and control
Studies reported by Abu Salih (1965); El Nur (1967); El Nur and Abu Salih
(1966); Golding (1930); Kirkpatrick (1931); Nour and Nour (1964); Tarr (1951,
1957).
Geographical distribution
Spreads in Nigeria and
Sudan.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show leaf curling and malformation.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Gossypium barbadense, Abelmoschus esculentus, Hibiscus
cannabinus, H. sabdariffa, Althaea rosea, Sida alba - leaf curling.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Gossypium barbadense,
Abelmoschus esculentus, Hibiscus cannabinus.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Gossypium barbadense (W), Abelmoschus esculentus (W).
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
