Index
Data collated by C.M. Chagas, 1985.
Nomenclature
Acronym
Strains
Coffee ringspot
from the Philippines is reported to be seed-borne, that from Brazil is not.
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Coffea arabica; from Brazil; by Kitajima and Costa (1972).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist (while
viruliferous mites present).
- Coffea arabica - chlorotic lesions.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; a mite;
Tenuipalpidae: Brevipalpus phoenicis. Virus transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; not transmitted by seed.
Geographical
distribution
Spreads in Brazil and the Philippines.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show chlorotic or necrotic local lesions.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Chenopodium amaranticolor, C. quinoa - necrotic local
lesions.
- Coffea arabica - chlorotic spots on leaves about 40 days
after infestation with viruliferous mites.
Diagnostically
insusceptible host species
Gomphrena globosa, Cucumis sativus,
Phaseolus vulgaris, Nicotiana glutinosa, N. tabacum.

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP:
70-75 °C. LIV: 19-22 days at 4ºC. DEP: log10 minus 4-5.
Particle morphology
Virions rhabdo- or
bullet-shaped; enveloped; with a clear modal length; of 178-224 nm (in thin
sections); 59-76 nm wide (in thin sections). Axial canal obvious; 8 nm in
diameter.
Cytopathology
Virions found in lesions of leaves and in
fruit pulp; in nuclei and in the perinuclear space.
