Camellia yellow
mottle (?) varicosavirus
Index
Data collated by C. Hiruki, 1991.
Nomenclature
Synonyms
camellia leaf yellow mottle virus, camellia
infectious variegation virus (Milbrath and McWhorter, 1946; Gailhofer et
al., 1988), camellia colour-breaking virus (Gailhofer et al., 1988),
camellia variegation virus.
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Camellia spp.; from the U.S.A; by Milbrath and McWhorter (1946);
Plakidas (1954).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist, or vary
seasonally, or disappear soon after infection. Symptoms chlorotic leaf flecks
and flower breaking.
- Camellia japonica, C. sasanqua - chlorotic leaf flecks and
flower breaking.
Transmission
Virus not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact between plants;
not transmitted by pollen.
Geographical distribution
Probably
distributed worldwide (wherever camellias are grown).
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show chlorotic flecks in leaves and flower
breaking.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Camellia japonica, C. sasanqua - chlorotic flecks and
mottle, flower breaking.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Camellia japonica, C. sasanqua.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Camellia japonica (W), C. sasanqua (W).
Susceptible host
species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Virions rod-shaped; of 120-170 nm;
30 nm wide. Axial canal obvious; 10 nm in diameter. Pitch of basic helix 10 nm.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, mesophyll, petals
and stamens; in cytoplasm.
