Burdock yellows
closterovirus
Index
Data collated by A.A. Brunt, 1991.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Arctium lappa; from Japan; by Inouye and Mitsuhata (1971).
Natural host range and symptoms
- Arctium lappa
- faint chlorosis, often marginal, or symptomless. Infected plants often also
contain burdock mosaic virus.
Transmission
Transmitted by a vector; an insect;
Dactynotus gobonis; Aphididae. Transmitted in a semi-persistent
manner. Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation (with difficulty).
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show yellows.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Nicotiana clevelandii - systemic leaf chlorosis.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Assay hosts (Local lesions or
Whole plants)
Nicotiana clevelandii (W).
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP:
45-50 °C. LIV: 1-2 days. Leaf sap contains few virions.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually flexuous; with a clear modal length; of 1725 nm; 12 nm wide. Axial canal
obscure. Basic helix obvious; pitch of basic helix 3.6 nm.
Physical properties
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves, mesophyll and
vascular parenchyma; in cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; are
viroplasms; they contain virions. Other cellular changes: necrosis of phloem
cells.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Carnation necrotic fleck, citrus tristeza and wheat yellow leaf
viruses.
