Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Vicia faba; from Japan; by Fukano and Yokoyama (1951).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms vary seasonally.
- Vicia faba - necrotic and chlorotic spots, rings, streaks.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible. Experimentally infected plants mostly show necrotic or chlorotic
local lesions; systemic mosaic.
Diagnostically susceptible
host species and symptoms
- Chenopodium amaranticolor, C.
quinoa - chlorotic local lesions or ringspots.
- Lathyrus odoratus,
Pisum sativum, Vicia faba - necrotic local lesions; systemic mosaic.
- Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Yamashiro Kurosando - necrotic local
lesions.
- Nicotiana clevelandii - chlorotic local lesions.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Cucumis
sativus, Glycine max, Nicotiana tabacum.
Maintenance and
propagation hosts
Lathyrus odoratus, Pisum sativum, Vicia
faba.
Assay hosts (Local lesions or Whole plants)
Chenopodium amaranticolor (L),
C. quinoa (L).

Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP:
55-60 °C. LIV: 8 days. DEP: log10 minus 3-4. Leaf sap contains few virions.
Purification method
Nakasone and
Inouye (1977).
Particle morphology
Virions rod-shaped; not enveloped;
usually straight; with a clear modal length; of 250 nm (& 150); 25 nm wide.
Axial canal obvious. Basic helix obvious.
Cytopathology
Virions found in all parts of the host
plant; in cytoplasm. Inclusions present in infected cells; are amorphous
X-bodies; they contain virions.
