Blueberry red
ringspot caulimovirus
Index
Data collated by A.A. Brunt, 1991.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Vaccinium corymbosum; from the U.S.A.; by Hutchinson and Varney
(1954).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Vaccinium corymbosum, V. formosum and possibly V.
macrocarpon - red ringspots in leaves and older stems; earlier, but
decreased, fruit yield.
Transmission
Virus not transmitted by mechanical
inoculation; transmitted by grafting.
Geographical
distribution
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Vaccinium corymbosum - red ringspots in mature leaves
of graft-inoculated plants.
Maintenance and propagation hosts
Susceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Purification method
Gillet and
Ramsdell (1984).
Physical and biochemical properties
Particle morphology
Virions isometric; not enveloped;
42-46 nm in diameter; rounded in profile; without a conspicuous capsomere
arrangement.
Physical properties
Two sedimenting components in
purified preparations; sedimentation coefficient 275 S; of the other(s)
212 S. Density 1.3 and 1.4 g cm-3 in CsCl. Isoelectric point pH 4.
Biochemical properties
Genome consists of DNA;
double-stranded.
Features of proteins
Virion protein(s) one;
Mr 44000; coat protein.
Cytopathology
Virions found in leaves and the mesophyll;
in nuclei and in unusual sites; but most are within cytoplasmic inclusions.
Inclusions present in infected cells; are viroplasms (enclosed within
endoplasmic reticulum); they contain virions.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated virions
Cauliflower mosaic, carnation etched ring, dahlia mosaic and figwort
mosaic viruses.
