Arracacha latent
(?) carlavirus
Index
Data collated by S. Phillips, 1986.
Nomenclature
Acronym
ICTV decimal code
Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Arracacia xanthorrhiza; from Littlehampton, U.K. in material from
South America.
Natural host range and symptoms
- Arracacia
xanthorrhiza - latent infection.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in the South and Central
American region; Bolivia and Peru.
Experimental host range
Several (3-9) families
susceptible. Experimentally infected plants mostly show local lesions, systemic
chlorosis.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and
symptoms
- Nicotiana clevelandii - systemic chlorotic
vein-banding.
- Gomphrena globosa - red local lesions; not systemic.
- Chenopodium quinoa - chlorotic local lesions; not systemic.
- Nicotiana megalosiphon - symptomless local and systemic infection.
Diagnostically insusceptible host species
Trifolium
incarnatum, Vigna unguiculata, Pisum sativum.
Maintenance and
propagation hosts
Assay hosts
(Local lesions or Whole plants)
Chenopodium quinoa (L), Nicotiana clevelandii (W).
Susceptible host species
Insusceptible host species
Families containing susceptible hosts
Families containing
insusceptible hosts
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
Leaf sap
contains few virions.
Purification method
Extract
Nicotiana leaves with 0.5 M KPO4 + 0.5% (w/v) Na2SO3 (pH 8.0),
add 5% Triton X-100 and then differentially centrifuge twice.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
usually straight; with a clear modal length; of 650 nm. Basic helix obscure.
Replication
Replication does not depend on a helper
virus.
Cytopathology
Virions found in all parts of the host
plant.
Taxonomy and
relationships
Virus(es) with serologically related virions
Lily symptomless (SDI 3), carnation latent (SDI 4) and chrysanthemum
B (SDI 7) viruses.
Virus(es) with serologically unrelated
virions
Narcissus latent, potato S, elder
carlavirus, red clover vein mosaic and honeysuckle latent viruses.
